Welcome to the Nantmawr webpages - dedicated to re-opening the 140 year old railway which once helped supply the outside world with Nantmawr Quarry's high quality limestone.
Located some four miles west of the town of Oswestry, near the Welsh border, the Nantmawr line is a lucky survivor. Having been built in the 1860s to serve the limestone quarry at Nantmawr, the railway joined the famous Tanat Valley Railway near Llanyblodwell, where another quarry was also opened down the valley at Llanddu. The line continued to operate under Cambrian, Great Western and British Railways ownership, until it was gradually run-down. Miraculously, however, it survived intact, having been mothballed, allowing nature to reign supreme.
Following some nine years of negotiation, the Oswestry-based Cambrian Railways Society acquired the 1.5 miles-long railway during the summer of 2004. Since the beginning of
September 2004, society members have been unearthing the line's infrastucture from several years worth of mulch and undergrowth. It is hoped to operate passenger trains along
part of the line in the near future.
